Cheshire Champion, Pat Robertson, of Wallasey Athletic Club and Oldershaw High School, put up a great performance at Rochdale last Saturday when she finished third in the girls' Northern Cross-Country Championships.
Pat started with some 60 other runners, on a two-mile race over undulating grassland in Springvale Park, Rochdale, and forged steadily, ahead until the halfway mark, when a small group broke away from the field and quickly opened a 100-yard gap. With only a quarter mile to go, Pat was lying in second place, although well behind the winning P. Lowis (Bury) when the runner immediately behind her 'cut a corner' to put Pat into third position. The Wallasey runner closed steadily on this girl but was still a few yards down at the finish.
Pat has the consolation of another crack at the Northern title next year, as she will still be in the same age group and hopes for another good run in the English championships at Blackburn on March 18th.
At the same meeting, club captain Barbara Banks ran in the senior race over a three miles course and improved on her last year's result by placing somewhere in the middle of a 40-plus field.
Wallasey A.C. send four teams to Eccles today for the Northern Counties' Cross-country Championships. As in the West Lancs. meeting at Blackpool two weeks ago, the junior team carry the main hopes for success.
Members are asked to co-operate in setting up a 'club records board', on which will be recorded the top five performances in each track event, in each age group from 1950 onwards.
Only personal best performances are needed (and the year In which they were performed). Send to C. W. Gee, 78 King Street, Wallasey, as soon as possible, please.
