Cheshire County A.A.A. hold their track and field championships at Lingham Park running track, Moreton, today at 2 p.m., and, weather permitting, the expected large crowd should see some exciting running, jumping and throwing events.
Athletes from Wallasey Athletic Club will be concerned in nearly every event and it is hoped that the club's red vests will figure prominently in the final analysis.
A series of time trials have been held over the past few weeks and most members will now have a good idea of their capabilities.
Last Saturday's efforts threw up another couple of personal-best performances when Pete Lewis and Melvin Schless recorded 56 secs. and 57.1 secs. for the 440 yards respectively, whilst Barrie Smith (56.9) headed Johnny Jones (57) in another heat.
Mike Teahan and Ian Wilson showed that they are not lacking zip with 36.4 and 36.8 in a 330 yards race, and all in all these runners should perform with some distinction today.
Miler Dave Lockley should be difficult to beat in his event and newcomer Brian McGrath should be placed in the high jump, whilst junior sprinter Alan Rea has been showing good form recently and must make at least one final.
The club championships are to be contested on three consecutive evenings at Lingham Track scoring will be taken from the Portuguese international tables.
As last year, each competitor will have to complete three events two track an on field, or two field and one track with the events so split that the best can be got out of each evenings competition.
The first group of events will be held next Thursday starting at 7:30 p.m. and they will be: 220 yards, one mile, high jump, javelin, and 440 hurdles, in this order, with all age groups able to participate.
