On Tuesday a number of Wallasey athletes compete in the Liverpool Parks and Gardens Championships at Wavertree. Ron Barlow ran brilliantly to win the two miles in a time of 9
mins. 22.8 secs. He was content to run in fourth for the first mile, but when the pace slackened Ron struck to front and gradually opened a gap of about 30 yards which he maintained till the finish.
Wallasey also entered a team in this race which finished in third position. This was of fine performance as three of the four-man team were either youths or juniors and therefore had to compete against much more seasoned competitors.
Wallasey filled the second and third places in the final of the senior 440 yards.
Mike Teahan and John Morley crossed the line together about 3 yards behind the winner. Mike was given the decision; both men being timed at 52.4. This time was a personal best for Mike.
After a very fast first lap in the youths 1 mile final Dave Lockley and Johnny Jones were well down the field but gradually both men moved up through the field until in the home straight when Dave Lockley sprinted into third position in a time of 4 mins. 36.5 secs. Johnny unfortunately did not have the same strength and finished in 6th position.
John McNamee threw well in the junior discus final to finish third with a distance of 76 feet.
Today the Club Championships are being held at Leasowe Road, when the Club photograph will be taken. It is hoped that as many club members as possible will attend.
