Wallasey's boy athletes returned from the 20th Inter Town Athletics Festival still with the J.R. Jones Championship Cup which they won last year. They beat their nearest rivals, Blackburn, by 14 pts. and won many of the events outright.
The most outstanding performance in the boys' events came from Ian Wilson (Oldershaw) and Mike Hampson (St. George's).
In the intermediate boys' 440 Ian Wilson peeled off a superb 53.3 second run when he held off a strong challenge from a Blackburn runner. Ian's time, which knocks 1.2 seconds off his previous best was seven tenths of a second inside A.A.A. National Grade II standard and 1.1 seconds inside the English Schools Grade I standard. His 220 yds. run in 24.4 was also inside the National Standard, and earned him 2nd place.
Mike Hampson delivered tremendous performances in the intermediate boys' Long Jump which he won with 19 ft. 5½ ins. and the discus in which he was second with 128 ft. 8 ins. In both events he was well over the National Standards.
The Wallasey boys scored impressive first and second place doubles in the two-mile
races and in the senior 440.
In the 440 Tony Childs (Oldershaw) won in 53.3 seconds and Allan Kin (Wallasey Grammar) was second in 53.4. Both performances were inside the National Standard.
In the intermediate mile Johnny Jones (Wallasey Grammar) won in 4:38.1 and Dave Lockley (Wallasey A.C.) was second in 4:38.4
This was the most clear cut victory of the afternoon. With his clinical front running style Johnny lead from start to finish, with Dave Lockley who had run an 880 beforehand, in close attendance. None of the opposition was within 220 yards of them at the finish. In the senior mile Barrie Smith lead from gun to tape in 4:34.9. Considering that it was a solo run this was really first-class. He was followed home by Mike McNamee (Wallasey Technical Grammar) in 4.43.4.
Although they did no win either race, Wallasey scored well in both half miles, in the intermediates Dave Lockley finished second in 2:07.2 and Mel Schless 5th, in 2:11.8 Mel's time was a personal best. In the senior 880 Allan Keating's (Wallasey A.C.) finished second with a personal best of 2:03.2 and Mike Whiteside (Wallasey A.C.) followed him home in 3rd place in 2:07.2
Eric Taylor (Wallasey Grammar) won the senior javelin with 118 ft. 2½ ins. throw and had the satisfaction of scoring points in all three of his field events. A. Todd (Oldershaw) partnered Eric in the event and finished 3rd with 122 ft. 5½ ins. Another event in which both Wallasey's representatives scored points was the final of the 110 yards hurdles. At which Colin Coulson (Wallasey Grammar) finished 3rd in 15.6 seconds and Keith Mason (Oldershaw) finished 4th.
Wallasey we second in both sprint relays. The intermediates finished in 47.4 and the seniors in 47.3.
In the overall championship placing the Wallasey girls finished second to an extremely strong St. Helens team.
The only outright victory they had came from Cheshire champion Angela James (Wallasey Technical High) who threw the discus 91 ft. 10 ins. Angela also finished 3rd in the 80 metres hurdles in 14.7 secs.
Hilary Owen, who had an exhausting day competing in a total of six races, can be justifiably proud of the fact that she contributed 30% of the girls' team points.
She was second in both the 150 yards and the 100 yards finals, in 17.4 and 12.0 seconds respectively. Both these races were run into a direct headwind and so the times do not reveal the true merits of the performances.
In the girls' javelin event Wallasey's pair, Sue Elliot and Sue Horrocks finished 3rd and 4th with 83 ft. 10 ins. and 73 ft. 2½ ins. throws.
The girls' relay was won by Wallasey in 52.9 seconds.
This race produced one of the day's most exciting finishes, when Hilary Owen, running the anchor leg, came from the back to the front of the field with a fabulous sprint to win by inches.
