This year is the first time that Wallasey's girl athletes have ventured into big meetings, and it is hoped that after taking the plunge in the Northern Counties Cross-Country Championships the girls will have lost their inhibitions about big events. The meeting was held at Oldham, in fairly good conditions but the course was tough,
In the senior women's event Margaret Ashcroft put up a good show to finish 19th in a time of 28 minutes 43 seconds, followed by Barbara Banks 25th in 29 minutes 48 seconds. In the intermediate girls Violet Sutton, making a return to athletics after a few weeks lay-off, finished 38th after having had a difficult run.
Yvonne Broomhead upheld the club's name in the junior girls' event by finishing 67th in 19 minutes 6 seconds.
Today Ron Barlow is competing in the National Championships. Favourite for the race is Mel Batty, and Ron Hill is backed as a place man, so with Ron Barlow running to form he should be close on the heels of Ron Hill.
Wallasey A.C. girls' netball team, who, had beaten Cadbury girls by narrow margin a fortnight ago to make themselves favourites for the league title, clinched the title last Saturday by beating Claremount Methodists. This means that Wallasey's girls have never lost a game, a magnificent feat considering that this is the first season they have played together as a team. Undoubtedly their athletic training has helped to contribute towards the girls' fitness and prowess.
