With no races last Saturday, Wallasey Athletic Club members concentrated on training over much longer distances than they usually do.
Most of the previous day's snow having melted, the ground was very soft and waterlogged, making running much more difficult, but better for building up strength and stamina. Even the youngest of Wallasey's athletes completed a training run of 8 or 9 miles although they normally race over 3 or 4 miles.
Today, Wallasey A.C. are going to Sherdley Park, St. Helens, for the West Lancs. Championships. After Ron Barlow's creditable run in the Inter-Counties Championships when he finished 29th - less than two minutes behind the winner - he can be expected to be up with the leaders.
The senior race will be nine miles, the junior six miles, youths' 4 miles, and boys' 3 miles. The boys' team are at full strength and running as well as ever, so with some luck they could well be in the first three. The senior and junior teams are down on strength but are certain to put up a good fight, whilst the youths' team, although running well, are unlikely to be placed.
Next week there will be a club run from H.Q in Leasowe Road, the club house will be open from 2 p.m. and training run will be start about 2.30 p.m. New runners will be welcomed.
