Wallasey Athletic Club hold their Christmas handicap today, the fastest runner, Rob Barlow, is the last to start, the rest of the field starting at predetermined times beforehand.
The times are estimated on past performances beforehand to bring all the athletes into a tight bunch at the finish.
The 3½ mile course starts outside St. George's School, down Leasowe Road to the hospital, turning right on to the promenade and back along the promenade, across the sands to the end of the Wallasey Promenade, swings off the promenade at the sandhills and cuts through the allotments, back onto Leasowe Road for the final sprint over the last 100 yards or so. Competing athletes are asked not to forget the small prize which each one should bring. All the prizes are piled onto to a table and the winner takes his pick. This way everyone who competes receives a prize, which makes a change from only the first three receiving a prize. It is hoped that the weather will be good enough to attract all active members to join in the handicap race. It is also intended to hold social runs on the morning of Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The times will be arranged today.
