The Waterloo Mammoth Road Race for 1964 attracted an entry of 224 athletes, including
a number of international runner's, last Saturday in competition for four cups - the Malcolm Bullock Cup for the winning team, the Festival Founder's Cup for the individual winner, the Lingus Cup for the first 'B' team, and the Daily Post and Echo Trophy for the first 'C' team. Of the 224 entrants only 146 athletes completed the course on a fine but cool Saturday.
Mel Batty led the field over the line in fine style to record a time of 37 mins. 42 secs., just 20 seconds outside Hill's record time of 37 mins., 22 secs.
Martin Hyman was lying second until the last few yards when D. Skelly sprinted past him to record 38 mins. 14 secs. with Hyman 38 mins. 17 secs.
Wallasey failed to enter a team; in fact only 3 men ran for the club. John Wright, who recently pulled a muscle, was down on form but managed to finish 50th in 41 mins. 54 secs. John Hughes, now back on form ran very well for his first time in this race to record 46 mins. 25 secs. in 102nd position. Mike Teahan finished 135 in 50 mins. 28 secs.
This fast road course with a few dragging gradients extends for about 7¾ miles and any athlete who competes the course does well as can be seen from the number of retirements from the race.
Today, Wallasey A.C. are hosts for the Wallasey Schools Championships and club members are asked to help in marking and in any way possible to make this event run smoothly. The clubs H.Q. will he open from 2:15 p.m. onward and new members will be welcome.
Members are asked if they will contribute an hour on Sunday morning, November 22, to help paint the inside of the club's H.Q. so as to have it newly decorated in time for the club's dance and social evening on December 12.
It is intended that all age groups will be catered for on the social evening, so members will be able to bring their friends along and be assured that a well balanced evening's entertainment will be forthcoming. Members interested should contact Margaret Ashcroft, Barbara Banks, Tony, Parry or David Field.
The annual: subscriptions have now been raised (seniors 27/6d. juniors 15/-, youths 10/- boys 5/-) to meet the cost of club improvements some of them long overdue.
