Next Saturday at Lingham Park Track, Wallasey Athletic Club will attempt to beat the time of 19 mins. 20 secs. for the 4 x' 1 mile youths' relay race. The expected foursome will be John Jones, Ray Kay, Les Watcham and Dave Lockley and they will have to average 4 mins 55 secs. to accomplish this feat.
Recently a Sale A.C. team set a new British record for this event with a great time of 19 mins. 24.4 secs., so a 'hard' standard has been set to beat.
A return friendly soccer match has been arranged with the Moreton Youth Centre for Tuesday, September 7 and as Moreton won the first game by the odd goal in seven a good effort will be expected from the 'Wallasey Reds'.
Amongst the crowd of athletes who grind out the miles in training each week, one or two who have recently 'caught the eye' are worthy of mention. Young Peter Lewis is improving, with each outing, as is Neil Hampson, and with Mike Potter, Ian Wilson and newcomer Melvyn Schless, they will form the nucleus of a first-year boys' cross -country team.
Doug Hanna has, with consistent training, become a useful track runner, and conversion to the `country' should not unduly upset his style. Along with Mark Aldridge, Alan Keating, and Barrie Smith, Doug will be in good company in the junior team, and with time this could well prove to be his 'best medium'.
