Wallasey A.C. traveled to Warrington last Saturday for their final match of the track season, and despite the absence of a dozen of their star athletes, put up a creditable performance.
In the women's match quantity was lacking but the quality was good and in the first event junior girls' 100, Lorna Swift lived up to her name by winning in 12.4 secs. This was quickly followed by victory in both the high jump events; Susan Elliot took the junior title at 4ft. 3 ins. with young Janet Murphy backing up at 3ft , 10 inches, and Anne Marie Sheridan defied more experienced competitors to win the senior jump with 4 ft 5 inches. Following this Barbara Banks was placed third in the 440 in 70 secs.
Valerie Metcalf won the shot a 31 ft. 8 ins, and was 4th in the javelin, an event in which Susan Elliot came 2nd with 71 ft. Susan followed this with 2nd in the 150 yds, in 18.9 secs., as did Yvonne Broomhead, then these two joined Lorna Swift and Janet Murphy for 5th place in the relay. The senior girls were given a walkover in their relay.
The women's final placings were: Warrington 99 pts, Rochdale 49, North Staffs 45, Wallasey 37, Bolton 13, Waterloo 7.
Wallasey's men kept pace with their ladles' section throughout the meeting. The first success came in the junior 880 in which John Hughes proved too strong, for his rivals, running away to win in 2 mins, 6.2 secs. He was ably supported by Barrie Smith, 3rd in 2:11 following a 2nd place in the high jump with 4ft. 10 ins, the same height as Mike Teahan, who shared this position with him.
The best performance of the afternoon came from Ian Wilson in the boys' 880. Following a slow first lap he tore through the field to record 2 mins. 11 secs., which is over 5 secs. faster than he has ever recorded before. In the same race Les Watcham was 4th, following a 5th place in the mile. Tony Parry won his 220 yds, in 24.8 secs, after a 2nd in the 100, whilst Alan Newton showed his lack of fitness in finishing 5th in his heat of the boys' race. Eric Griffiths and Dave Adair finished 4th and 5th respectively in the boys' 220 and Mike Mason showed that if he trained regularly he could run a good 220.
The, 2-mile team was placed 4th; Brian Woolford was 9th in 10 mins. 6 secs, Brian Chalton 11th, in 10:09 and John Hughes 13th, 10:16. Carl Gee won the discus at 108 ft 3 inches, and was 2nd in the javelin 127 ft. 6 inches, 3rd in the shot (36 ft. 8 inches,), and 4th in the high jump.
Match score: Warrington 151 pts., Waterloo and North Staffs tied at 64, Wallasey 56, Sefton 53, Rochdale 43, and Bolton 34.
