After finishing 3rd in this race for the last 2 seasons, Brian Woolford made no mistake this time, taking the lead at the end of the first mile, he stormed away from the opposition for a fine victory.
The race this year was held at Sherdley Park, St. Helens, over an excellent five mile course, consisting of fast undulating parkland. A fast start saw the large field of over one hundred runners soon strung out, and for the first mile the leading bunch consisted of D. Jeffs of Wirral, T. Beesley of Pembroke, J. Deloge of Warrington and K. Mather from Wallasey, with Wallasey's Brian Chalton, John Young and Brian Woolford not far behind.
However, Woolford now in full flight, was moving very fast, and inside another half mile had taken over the lead and from that moment never looked like being caught. Moving away all the time he expectedly came in a clear winner by over fifty yards from second runner J. Delooze of Warrington, with D. Jeffs of Wirral 3rd.
Wallasey's other counters were K. Mather 7th, Brian Chalton, after surviving a bad stomach upset, ran strongly to finish 8th. John Young wh is improving each race 35th, a pity there are not more races, Hugh Pritchard 54th and D. Field 57th.
The team race was won by Wirral 110 pts., Warrington 213 pts. and Pembroke 3rd 315 points. MISSING LAST £ paras
