Running in the 2-mile team race at the Lever trophy meeting on Monday, Ron Barlow led Wallasey Athletic Club to a great win in 8 mins. 8.2 secs,
In a field of 28 runners from seven Merseyside and Manchester clubs, he took the lead during the second lap and thereafter was never headed. He was ably supported by John Young (3rd), and Brian Chalton (8th).
Kevin Mather wall second in the 880 yards, John Morley finished 6th in the 440 yards; and these two together with Mike Smith and Mike Teehan made up the mile medley relay which finished in 5th place.
The youth team took 3rd place in the Sunlight Trophy thanks to sterling work by Robin Tarrant and (2nd in 100 yds in 10.8 secs.), and 2nd in long jump 18 ft. 3½ ins. and Frank Davis (5th in one-mile team race and 5th in 880 yds.), while Harry Amis and Bob Parry completed the 4 x110 yds,. Relay and Bob took 4th place in the javelin,
On the same day Brian Woolford, our Northern Counties marathon champion competed in a 10 mile road race at Roundhay, Leeds. In a race won by Ron Hill in record time from fellow international's Brian Kilby and Jim Alder (the Scottish champion), 'Woolley' did well to finish 5th it is hoped that this warm-up race will stand him in good stead when he and Ron Barlow tackle the best in the country in the A.A.A's Marathon Championships on August 17.
