Once again the track season is upon us and for the next four months the arduous running that is cross-country gives way to the cut and thrust of track and field athletics.
The first meeting of any importance, the Cheshire Championships, are being held today at Cheadle on the comparatively new running track, and the writer finds it a poor state of affairs that a meet of such note should have to be staged so early in the season, when many runners have barely substituted spikes for studs. Be this as it may, today, Wallasey A.C.'s athletes do battle with their rivals old and new of Cheshire county, and if times and distances recorded today, do not appear to the layman to be of any great significance he may bear in mind that a track athlete's best performances are usually reserved for when he is racing fit, and this will not come until July or August when, ironically most of the big meetings are past.
Today, we have Brian Chalton in the steeplechase, Ron Barlow in the 3 miles where he meets Scottish international runner M. Beresford of Sale, Kevin Mather in the 880 and 1 mile whilst juniors Mark Aldridge and John Morley run in the 1 mile and 440 yards respectively.
