Last Saturday, Wallasey Athletic Club sent a strong team to compete in the Salford Road Relay, which although without John Wright, was expected to be well to the fore with runners of the calibre of Barlow, Woolford, Mather and Chalton.
Once again they rose to the occasion, and, although they failed by 11 seconds to beat that great road racing team Manchester and District Lads' Club, they finished second of forty teams who contested this race over four laps each of two and two-third miles with Manchester A.C. in third place.
Fastest time was by four-minute miler Brian Hall, who covered the course in 12 minutes 23 seconds, and was followed by fellow international Ron Hill in 12 minutes 27 secs., Wallasey distance runner Ron Barlow 12 minutes 35 seconds, the Wallasey miler Kevin Mather, 12 minutes 37 seconds, Amateur A.A. mile champion Stan Taylor (who last season ran a mile in 3 minutes 58 seconds) 12 minutes 41 seconds and the indefatigable Derek Ibbotson 12 mins. 51 secs.
