Wallasey A.C. athletes have been active over the past week, and many fine performances have been achieved, especially by the club's three senior runners, Ron Barlow, Kevin Mather and Brian Woolford.
On June 5 the club participated in an inter-club meet at Wavertree Playground and in spite of the poor turn-out the team managed to finish in fourth position. In the senior events Carl Gee was placed second shot putt with a throw of 88 ft. 10 ins. and Brian Woolford took fourth place in the three miles with a personal best performance of 14 mins. 34 secs. Brian also competed in the mile and recorded 4 mins. 41 secs.
In the junior events George Cornah threw the javelin 122 ft 8 ins. using the senior implement, this was most promising performance. Tony Duncan was placed third in both the high and long jumps with distances of 5 ft. 4 ins. and 18ft. 10ins. respectively.
Peter Meldrum set a new personal best in the youths' mile with 4 mins. 47 secs. and Mal Dunn was second in the youths' 100 yards in 10.5 secs.
Kevin Mather ran in a mile a race at the fast Witton Park track at Blackburn on the following evening and recorded the fast time of 4 mins. 8.8 secs. The fast early pace did not suit Kevin and he tired on the last lap when Derek Ibbotson came past to take third place in 4 mins. 3.9 secs. The event was won by Brian Hall in 4 mins. 0.5 secs. from Peter Keeling who returned 4 mins. 0.7 secs.
On Saturday, June 9, Ron Barlow and Brian Woolford representing Cheshire, competed in the 20-mile Inter-County Championships and established themselves as two top-class long
distance runners by taking third and second places respectively. Ron and J. Tarrant (Herefordshire) took the lead at the end of the first 10 mile lap but Brian Woolford and T. Edwards (Somerset) moved through rapidly on the second lap, and first Tarrant and Barlow were dropped. Edwards went on to win by 13.4 secs. from Brian Woolford in a time 1 hr. 47 mins. 47.6 secs. Woolford recorded 1 hr. 48 mins. 1 sec. and Barlow 1 hr. 48 mins. 25 secs. Cheshire took third team prize with 33 points, while Lancashire were first and Middlesex were second, both counties scoring 27 points.
Brian Chalton competed in Bank of England sports and took third place in the mile, with 4 mins. 35.5 secs.
On Whit Monday, Kevin Mather competed in a mile race at Fallowfield and equalled his best ever mile time when he finished in third place, Peter Keeling outsprinted Derek Ibbotson to win in 4 mins. 2.9 secs. a new track record with Ibbotson second in 4 mins. 3.6 secs., Kevin returned 4 mins. 6 secs.
New club member John Watkins had an impressive victory in the under 15 100 yards race at Pilkington Recreation Sport Meet when recorded 11.4 secs.
