On January 20th the Inter-County Championships were held in ideal conditions at Western Park, Leicester.
There was a record number of county teams competing this year and 37 finished complete teams. Lancashire proved to be the finest county team yet seen in these championships, by packing all six counting runners in the first eleven places and two more in the first twenty-nine. Lancashire's total of points was 43 beating Essex by 78 points and Yorkshire by 138 points. The Cheshire team finished 16th a great improvement on last year's performance when the county failed to close in.
Wallasey runner Brian Woolford was the first man home for Cheshire in 43rd position and Kevin Mather finished in 104th place. A former Wallasey club member, Ken Poyning now in
the Parachute Brigade was 130th.
Today the West Lancashire Championships are to be held at Leyland and club members are taking part although it is unlikely that there will be a complete team because of injury.
