Last week several members of the club travelled to West Derby for a friendly match against Sefton Harriers. Unfortunately only three of that club's runners arrived and the race had to be cancelled. On November 4 the annual Wallasey Schoolboy Championship were held at Club H.Q.
For once the weather was fine and conditions were ideal for running although the long grass on Bidston Moss hampered some of the smaller boys. There was a record entry of 161 runners in the three races and spectators saw some keen races during the afternoon.
In the junior race the first two runners proved too strong for the rest of the field. The winner was Robinson of Oldershaw in the excellent time of 9 rnin. 12 secs., followed by Leatherbarrow of Moreton in 9 mins. 18 secs. These two were well clear of the third man home, Pollard (Moreton) who recorded. 9 mins. 40 sees. Seventy runners started the course and all finished. In the team race Moreton packed well (2, 3, 11, 16) to score 32 points. St. George's were placed second with 38 points and Oldershaw were third with 51 pts. Other placings were: Gorsedale 'A' 55 pts, 4th; Technical Grammar 'A' 78 pts, 5th; Gorsedale 'B' 95 pts, 6th; St. Hilda's 116 pts, 7th; Technical Grammar 'B' 166 pts, 8th; Gorsedale 'C' 167 pts. 9th and Oldershaw 'B' 236 pts, 10th.
The senior race was a much closer affair, only 5 seconds covering the first three home. The winner was Deakin of St. George's in a time of 11 mins. 48 secs., and seconds behind him was Hurley (Gorsedale) with Gibbons of Moreton third in 11 mins. 33 secs. Moreton scored a double by winning the team race with a total of 29 pts, (3, 4, 9, 13), Gorsedale 'A' were second with 34 pts. and St. George's third with 46 pts. Thirteen teams closed in and 76 runners completed the course.
The youth's race was a marked contrast to the other races; only 15 runners started. This small entry was composed of boys from the three Grammar Schools, and Peter Meldrum (Oldershaw) scored a convincing victory over Gordon Benson (Wallasey G.S.),
Meldrum returned a time of 14 mins. 28 secs, to beat Benson by 26 seconds, with Martin (W.G.S.) third in 15 mins, 5 secs.
Today the second Liverpool & District Mob Run takes place from Club H.Q. at 3:00 p.m. Wallasey has a good chance of winning this match so supporters will be welcome.
Strength training and the athlete
It is better for all athletes to get some resistance exercise than none at all. Circuit training is a valuable way of attaining a reasonable level of basic fitness training.
From a muscular point of view, runners get some resistance exercise from running, either by sprinting, fast running running with heavy boots on, or even with weights around their middles.
Above all else, they spend most of their time improving stamina, and endurance, and most running schedules are designed for this very purpose.
Sprinters, hurdlers, vaulters and throwers, however, are concerned largely with the development of more power, and in these cases the arguments fall heavily on the side of weight training.
When handling large amounts of weights athletes should adopt the rule that they must first and foremost do exercise properly, and make sure that, those muscle groups to be exercised are indeed exercised,. Lastly, we must not forget that the value of weight and circuit training has always been additional to normal athletic training, and tecnique must go hand in hand with resistance training. In all these exercises the athlete's performance must methodically reocorded and a steady continual progress be the prime objective.
