Wallasey staged an inter club match with Sefton and Waterloo on Thursday of last week, fortunately because of the poor weather, the number of events had to be cut from 15 to 7, with Wallasey providing four individual winners.
Ron Barlow started well by winning the two miles in fine form in 9 mins. 30 secs, his second best time this season. Brian Woolford also ran well to finish third.
T. Dunn won the youths' 100 yds. and Ray Wood and Carl Gee finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the senior 100 yards the senior 880 yds. Kevin Mather won neatly in 2 mins. 9 secs., after a first lap of 69 secs. There were only two field events, as the long jump and high jump pits were unusable; Carl Gee won the discus and Mike Shepherd was second in the shot. The final result was: 1 Wallasey 60 pts.: 2 Waterloo 27 pts.: Sefton 23. On Saturday some members travelled to Widnes for the Widnes Police Sports and once again wet weather spoiled the afternoon.
Carl Gee competed in the shot but was not placed, but Kevin Mather, was second in the half-mile handicap after leading until the last 80 yards. T. Ash of Sale, the Cheshire champion just beat Kevin in an exciting finish. Ron Barlow again ran well in the two miles but lacked the necessary confidence to keep up with the leaders. He finished very fresh in 9 mins. 25. secs. with Brian Woolford further back. The winner of this race was Colin Robinson of Rochdale, National Junior Cross-country champion in 9 mins. 6.6 secs.
The Lever Trophy meeting is to be held on July 29 at Port Sunlight. All members should try to be present at this important local meeting either as competitors or spectators.
Entries for the Cheshire 6 miles championship should be sent in by July 31st the race being on the 12th August.
