At Southport last Saturday a combined Wallasey Athletic Club team of seniors and juniors were successful in winning the Milk For Stamina Road Relay over six laps of 4 miles 210 yards.
The Wallasey team consisted of club captain John Wright, Pete White, Ron Barlow, Dave White, Phil Townsend and Brian Chalton and their performance in winning this race against strong opposition represents a very fine start to the winter season.
Although it must be said that the first team past the post were in fact that famous club Bolton United Harriers, who were disqualified for an infringement, the merit of the Wallasey team's performance can be seen from the fact that they finished considerably ahead of their mani local rivals Liverpool Pembroke and Liverpool Harriers.
Wallasey were given a flying start by club captain John Wright. Wright with his usual consistency, handed over a slight lead on completion of the first lap in 20 minutes 12 seconds to Ron Barlow, who showed he is coming right back to his best by proceeding to record the fastest lap of the day with 20 minutes 10 seconds.
Juniors, Brian Chalton and Phil Townsend also ran exceptionally well to finish the lap in 21 minutes 16 seconds and 21 minutes 12 seconds respectively, with senior captain Pete White running a rather lonely last leg without the inspiration of close opposition.
Contrary to last week's notes the opening cross-country run of the season take's place today commencing at 3:00 p.m. from club headquarters.
Next Saturday the annual get together of local clubs known as the Monstre meet will be run from the headquarters of Wirral A.C. at Woodchurch.
Members are also reminded that the first of this season's three mob runs will be run from our own club headquarters at Leasowe Playing Fields on Saturday, October 17th.
Track athletes who wish to keep fit during this winter should contact Carl Gee of 78 King Street, Wallasey, (telephone Wallasey 5129) who will be pleased to arrange for gymnasium or weight training as well as outdoor training.
