Several members of Wallasey Athletic Club will be at the Manchester University sports ground today to compete for Cheshire against a combined side from Manchester and Liverpool Universities - usually regarded as an eliminating event for the selection of the Cheshire team, to compete in the inter-counties championships at White City, London at Whitsun.
Despite stricter standards set up this year, Carl Gee, the club's track captain should still be sure of selection for the discus, he has trained fanatically during the winter. So should Corporal Tony Melville, the mighty hammer thrower. County cross-country champion John Wright has declined for family reasons.
Possibles, are three-miler Ron Barlow, steeplechaser Dave White, and a potentially fast miler from the Grammar School, John Young.
An increasing number of Wallasey's young athlete's are training hard these lighter evenings at the athletic club's headquarters' at Leasowe. International cross-country runner Mike Firth (South London Harriers), who is married to ex-club member Mavis Ashworth, was there for a training spin over Easter.
Expert coaching is being laid on at the club field on Tuesday evenings from now on and youngsters wanting to do well in their school sports would find it well worth while attending, For the more experienced, the evening meeting held at Port Sunlight Oval so successfully last year, start again next Wednesday.
