In the graded scratch competitions at Wavertree Playground last Saturday, Wallasey Athletic Club were represented in a number of the events.
In the second grade half-mile Pete White came through to finish second, with a time of 2 minutes 11 seconds, Brian Chalton gained third place in a grade three half-mile, John Young (eighth), Ian Hunter (12th) and Bill Morris (14th), all completed in a one mile race second grade.
On Saturday next, May 9, the Cheshire County road relay race is to be run at Macclesfield, Wallasey's team will be selected from P. White, D. White, A. Townsend, P. Townsend, D. Standfast, A. Curtis, R. Barlow, B. Chalton, I. Hunter, R. Stewart-Hess and V. Bayliss.
Also on May 9 a number of graded scratch event are to be held at Warrington. Entries to be submitted as usual to J. C. Rice, 42 Mimosa, Road, Liverpool.
Discus thrower Carl Gee has been notified of his selection to represent Cheshire in the Inter-Counties championships on Whit weekend.
The first training and coaching session promoted by the club to cater specially for the younger element was well attended, and a talk in the club house was given by coach Bob McCaig on the ambitions of the coaching scheme followed by an hour's training.
A few competitions were held to gain an idea of the capabilities of the lads in various events and the results were as follows: - ,
100 yards, first heat: 1. A. Ferris 11.5 secs., 2. S. Little 11.7 secs., 3 J. Harris 11.8 seconds.
100 yards second heat: 1. A. McTeer. 11.3 seconds, 2. J. Howard 11.8 secs., 3. C. Jones. 12.5 seconds.
Half mile 1. D. Duncan 2 mins. 22.4 seconds 2. J. Morley 2 minutes 26 seconds and 3. J. Currie 2 minutes 27.7 seconds.
These coaching sessions will continue to be organised each Tuesday and Thursday evening throughout the summer.
