Wallasey Athletic Club travel to Bolton today, where the Northern Counties Cross-Country Championships are being staged. Hopes for success here rest with the boys and junior teams.
After the second team placing in the West Lancashire Championships, the boys have been greatly encouraged and are showing great keenness and zest in their training. This could result in their getting into the placings in the stiffer competition they will experience in the 'Northern'. Alan Howard appears to have hit form with a bang and should be well among the leading places at the finish.
The club have been experiencing a very lean time with a shortage of youth members this year and as a result have been unable to field complete, team in this category at recent championships. Once more the same lack of members will result in John Young and Billy Morris competing without team backing. In the junior section we have a very experienced team composed mostly of second year juniors led by Ron Barlow. With every member of the team 'on form' on the day they must be a team to be reckoned with.
It is hoped that all seniors selected will make every effort to turn out today, John Wright will be a doubtful starter because of illness and first home is likely to be Brian Woolford. Dave Standfast and Hugh Pritchard are both showing good form and should be near to the front at the finish.
The coach leaves Liscard at 11:30 a.m. prompt and Birkenhead Town Hall 11:45 a.m.
Sunday morning training has become a regular meeting and last Sunday fifteen members were to be seen trying out their paces at Lingham Park.
Any club members interested in taking part in a training jaunt on Sunday morning should contact Bob McCaig, 80 Taunton Road or turn up at Lingham Park between 11:00 and 11:30 a.m.
