A strong team of Wallasey athletes made their way to Helsby B.l.C.C. Sports last Saturday. Out of 47 starters in the 100 yds. Wallasey A.C. had two athletes in the last 6. E. Bennett, and Mr. A. Price the latter gained 2nd place in the final in a time of 10 seconds.
The Wallasey medley relay team consisted of R. Lancaster, E. Bennett, M. Price and J. Winrow. Although not quite up to strength they managed to gain 3rd place in the Cheshire County Championship. A 'special return' for John Winrow, who stepped in at the last minute in place of R. Fullerton. John is only just graduating to this type of racing and at this meeting he ran a good 'last leg, 880 yds.' and more than held his own against top class athletes.
Once again that great young runner, R. Barlow ran a beautiful race in the 880yds. junior flat handicap. Off scratch he passed a field of 21 competitors, some of them 40 yds. ahead at the start to finish very close to the winner in second place.
Last Saturday our Marathon team competed in the Radcliffe 21 mile road race. The course is hilly. Out of a team of four, we had two who completed the distance, J. Lynch and F. K. Ledward. M. E. Devereux retired at 10½ miles and R. Scammell retired at 14 miles.
J. Lynch had another good run and finished 14th in a time of 2 hrs. 12 mins. 30 secs. F. K. Ledward also ran very well to finish in 35th place in a time of 2 hrs. 37 mins. 5 secs. I think this is very creditable for Frank; who had been working all Friday night, and had only two hour clear before the race.
The winner was J. Lancaster, who won in a time of 1 hr. 59 mins. 46 secs. He is counted an one of Britain's Olympic Games Marathon hopes. The team's next race is at Wakefield on July 14th.
