The West Lancashire Cross-Country Championship races were held at Southport last Saturday, over a hard course.
The boy's race was won by B. Mills of Liverpool Pembroke Harriers with Dave Swarbrick of Blackpool Harriers second. Ken Poyning ran very well to gain fifth position. Other Wallasey club runners were Brian Anthony 23rd, then Brian Shaw 27th and Gerry Williams 31st. The team race was won by Pembroke with a total of 17 points, Wallasey's team with 83 points did well to finish in fourth position.
In the youth's race Ron Barlow won again so has won every championship he has run in this season and on this present form he seems certain of gaining a place in the Northern Counties Championships to be held next week, February 18th at Port Sunlight, Tony Townsend finished in tenth position, Tony Farrell 28th, Ken Tunstall 31st, Dave White 38th,and Phil Townsend 39th. Second iin the race was W. Bennet of Wirral A.C. with Vic Cowan of Liverpool Harriers third. The team race was won by Liverpool Harriers with Pembroke second and Wirral A.C. third, Wallasey's team finished in fourth position.
The junior race was won by Steve Rogers of Sefton Harriers. The winning team was Pembroke Harriers with Liverpool Harriers second and Warrington A.C. third. Wallasey counters were Ian McIvor 18th, Bill Farrell 22nd, Hugh Pritchard 25th and Maurice Devereux 42nd.
In the senior race, Pembroke again won the team honours, Sutton Harriers had the second team home and Liverpool Harriers the third. The individual winner was Eddie Williams of Pembroke with J. Robinson, also of Pembroke, second and the LiverpooI Harrier, Ron Davies third. First man home for Wallasey was John Lynch in 34th position followed by Ray Scammell 46th, Bob Fullerton 47th and F. C. Hoy 50th.
This week a team of juniors and seniors combined are visiting the R.A.F. camp at West Kirby for a friendly cross-country fixture. The travelling arrangement for those going to the fixture are to meet at Saughall Massie Hotel at 2 p.m.
