Last Saturday, Wallasey A.C. had their first proper race on the new course along the shore to Meols and back.
The course was changed because of complaints about the severity of the old course over Bidston Hill.
However, after last week's conditions I feel that it will not be long before cross-country runners are seen on the hill again.
The main fault's with the shore course are that there is always a strong wind and that actual conditions are very difficult, there being too much road and embankment.
Last week's match was another League triangular against Liverpool Pembroke and Wirral A.C.
As expected, Pembroke won with 24 points, but Wirral rather suprisingly defeated us with 64 points to our 166 points.
First man home was Ken Gates in 35 mins. 51 secs., and Wallasey's men were 21st R. Milee, 26th John Lynch, a little of form; 28th, Jim Johnston, brother of the well known Bob Johnston, making a welcome return to the sport; 29th John Ryan, a big improvement, 30th Alan Clarke, who is getting fitter with each race; 32nd Jim Rimmer, in his first race season; 35th Ram Hewson, now recovered from flu'.
The boys and youths had a friendly match against the same clubs. We gained second place, Wirral were first with 13 pts. Wallasey 15 points, and Pembroke 17 points.
Promising Ron Barlow was surprisingly beaten into second place by Harris of Wirral in 19 mins. 55 secs., Brian Woolford was 4th, lan Mclvor, completed the counters.
This Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Wallasey A.C. promote the Wallasey Schoolboys and Youths Championships. Team managers and individual competitors are asked to report at 2:30 p.m. to collect numbers etc. Club junior and senior members are asked to turn out as stewards and marshalls.
