Conditions were far from ideal for the Cheshire Championships on Saturday at Port Sunlight. The cold wind did not encourage good times but several track and field records were broken.
Len Platt did not defend his 100 yards title, but retained his three jump titles, Carl Gee obtained second place in the discus and third in the shot, whilst Ray Owen was placed second in the javelin and third in the discus.
Other placings were Bob Fullerton third in the 440 yards and 880 yards,. Matt Smith second in the pole vault, R. A. Lancaster third in the 440 yards hurdles and A. M. Scullion third in the hammer.
In the sprint events Brian Baird and Margaret Collings reached the finals. Margaret finishing third in the women's 100 yards. Maurice Price and Penny Price were each placed in their heats but were eliminated from the finals because only five lanes were available.
Margaret Collings failed an inch below the winner of the high jump for second place and the relay team, running for the first time on a cinder track, gave an encouraging performance and finished third. Others who took part were Ray Wood, junior long jump and 100 yards; R. Hewson and J. McGill, senior long jump; H. Pritchard, junior mile; C. Harris and J. Lynch, senior three miles and Ken Ledward, senior 880 yards and two miles steeplechase.
