Main local interest today centres on Cheshire County track championships to be held at Port Sunlight Oval in which Wallasey will be well represented.
Although peak performance cannot be expected at such an early stage of the season, some very close competition should be seen as particularly in this Olympic year most athletes will be keen on being selected for the Cheshire team to compete at White City in the inter-counties championships.
The main Wallasey hopes are again pinned on Len Platt in the jumping events, but he is likely to be thoroughly extended by Nigerian, J. O. Lawrence and fellow Wallaseyan, Geoff Moores who are both capable of high performances. Good luck also to John McGill in the junior long jump.
Wallasey will also be strongly represented in the discus event by Cheshire representative Ray Owen who will be supported by weight-lifter Geoff Joynson who
is making his first attempt at this event. Good luck, Geoff!
In the running events it will be interesting to see how Bob Johnston fares in the three-mile event after his successful cross-country season, while the ladies relay team appear to have a very capable team Mesdames - Greenslade, Hughes, Price and
Marathon men Frank Ledward and Arnold Dinsdale tackle their first race of the season at Radcliffe to-day over twenty-mile course.
The course is an arduous one including a number of very punishing climbs, and particularly if the weather is hot, Wallasey's two representatives will find this race a sharp reminder of the severity of this most grueling of athletic events.
Considerable work still remains to be done on club H.Q. and a working party is required this Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. members please support.
Applications for membership to be sent to track secretary Ramsey Hewson, 16 Taunton Rd., Wallasey. Telephone - Wallasey 7214.
