Wallasey Athletic Club did not have a very successful afternoon at Port Sunlight Oval last Saturday when senior, junior and ladies teams competed for the Lever Trophy.
The ladies team was placed third while the seniors and juniors occupied fifth and sixth places respectively.
These moderate team places were somewhat relieved by a few good individual performances, notably by Len Platt and Margaret Collings.
Len comfortably won the long jump with a distance of 22ft. 2 in. and then went on the win the 100 yards sprint from a good class field in 10 seconds dead. It was his first competitive sprint of the season. Margaret Collings also did well in taking second place in both high and long jumps with leaps of over 4ft. 6 ins. and 17ft. respectively.
Other places were obtained by Ray Owen, second in the senior discus, while third places were obtained by Brenda Humphries, in the ladies' discus, Carl Gee senior javelin and Matt Smith, senior high jump.
On the same day two Wallasey runners took part in the Liverpool City Marathon race run over a 26¼ mile course starting from St. George's Plateau and finishing at the Liverpool Football Ground.
Although Phil Morant and Alan Clarke had not had sufficient training to expect a fast time, both runners ran pluckily and Clark was successful in finishing the course in 3 hours 40 minutes. Morant had to retire at 14 miles owing to muscle trouble.
The club championships have been continued with the junior hop, step and jump being won by John McGill with a distance of 35 ft. 1 in. and the half mile by Reg Lancaster in 2 mins. 17 secs.
