On Saturday last representatives of Wallasey Athletic Club journeyed to West Derby to take part in the Monstre Meet organised by Sefton Harriers on behalf of the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union.
In excellent weather, a large field of 250 runners drawn from all the local, clubs enjoyed a social run, culminating in a race over the last mile.
In the senior race, won by R. Perry, of Pembroke, John McFarland and Bob Johnston ran well to finish in fifth and sixth positions respectively.
Other members, no less energetic, took part in a training run from the club under club captain John Edwards, who has recently returned from the South. Many will remember him for his outstanding running in 1946 and 1947 when he gained Northern honours as well as being the Liverpool & District champion, and his return will considerably strengthen the senior team,
As Bob Johnston, former Liverpool & District youth champion and junior champion for the past two years, will also be in the seniors, it is possible that the forthcoming season will prove the most profitable of the post-war seasons for the senior section.
Most of last year's successful youth team now qualify as juniors and should continue to run well in this higher group, boys and youths are largely an unknown quantity, but Don Anderson, the English Schools half-mile champion and record holder, is sure to improve on last year's splendid showing and will be a force to be reckoned with in his final year as a youth.
The annual schoolboys' and youth championship organised by the club will be staged from club headquarters on Saturday, November 3rd, when an entry of about 150 boys is anticipated. Interest, in this event, is increasing,
The schools championship is a team event, and most schools will be represented by at least one team. Competitors will cover a two and a quarter mile course starting on the Corporation Playing Fields, Leasowe Road, and the winning team will hold the A. G. Nicholson Challenge Trophy for one year. This is at present held by Moreton Secondary Modern School, who have won it on the three previous occasions the race has been held. Medals will also be awarded.
The youth race is over three miles, and is restricted to competitors of 16 years and over but under 18.
Entries for both events, there are no fees - close on October 7th and should be sent to the secretary, R. F. Hubbard, 39 Beech Road, Birkenhead.;Phone B'head 3550 from whom entry forms can at present be obtained.
He will also welcome inquiries from potential members or from any person interested in the club's activities.
This Saturday the club run from headquarters at 3 p.m. prompt - boys, youths, juniors and seniors please respond.
