Wallasey Athletic Club cross-country members availed themselves of the fine weather on Saturday for an enjoyable run, without undue exertion. Whilst the youths were content with a mere three miles, juniors put in useful work over six miles, and vice captain Bob Johnson led the seniors around a course of
eight miles, a distance which marathon men, McCaig and Ledward did not consider a tiring afternoon.
Training will progress week by week under the direction of John Edwards, the first serious event being the Waterloo Road Race - on 10th November, in which it is hoped the club will be well represented.
New members will be welcomed to this training programme and enquiries should be made to asst. secretary; Mr. Bob McCaig, 30 Taunton Road, Wallasey (Tel - 8904), who will be pleased to give all information.
Intending competitors in the Wallasey Schools Cross-Country Championships and Wallasey individual Youth Championship are reminded that Saturday next, October 27th is the closing date for entries. Forms are now available from the Youth Office, Town Hall, or the Secretary, R.. Hubbard, 39 Beech Road, Birkenhead. (phone Birkenhead. 3550).
Both races are open to competitors - who have been resident within the borough for at least six months or have been a member of a school or youth organisation in the borough for that period.
These races provide friendly rivalry between the schools and individuals and good racing is assured by the keenness of these youngsters. It is hoped that many will maintain their interest in a sport at which England was second to none in 1951.
The winter months also provide the weight lifting section with a rather heavy programme of events and their success in a recent four sided match at Wallasey augurs well for the future. Under their new captain, Jack McCulloch, training will be intensified with a view to even better results being achieved in the future.
