Alan Pennington Qualifies Olympic Stadium Berlin

Tuesday.

By winning the third heat of the 200 metres in 21.1sec. Jesse Owens, the giant American, broke another Olympic record, beating Eddie Tolan's time by 1-10th of a second.

Alan Pennington, the Oxford sprinter, qualified for the next round of the 200 metres by finishing third to M. Osendarp, the Dutch holder of the British 220 yards title, but A. W. Sweeney, the other British entrant, failed to qualify.

Sweeney had the bad luck to be in Owen's heat. His time of 21.9sec. would have taken him into the next round in any other.

As usual Pennington, drawn in lane three, was slow in getting into his stride, but he produced a fine finishing burst and easily qualified for the second round, with 22 I secs . which was 2-10ths of a second below Sweeney's time.

C. B. Holmes, the third British entrant, did not start in the seventh heat owing to a torn muscle. This heat was won by the American, R. R. Packard, who equalled Nolan's old Olympic record of 21.1 seconds, beating the South African, E. Grimbeck, and A. Steinmetz, of Germany.
