The first cross-country championship of the above club took place on Saturday under ideal climatic conditions.
The course taken, which was quite seven miles, was mapped out by way of Manor-road, Wallasey-road, St. Hilary brow, across the meadows to Leasowe and back across the golf links, via Grove-road, Mount Pleasant-road, and Seabank-road. The result appeared to hang in the balance nearly all the way, the leaders constantly changing places, but on entering Seabank-road with about three-quarters of a mile to go, Barley broke away, and finishing vigorously, won in splendid style in 45 minutes, being about 300 yards ahead of E. E. Jones, the second man, who was in turn closely followed by T. J. Brookes. The prizes consisted of two gold medals and one gold centre medal, and were the generous gift of Alderman James Smith.
Three prizes were also given for a sealed handicap, which was held in connection with this race, these being acquired by C. N. Hudson, J. Urmson, and H. Rothery respectively. The first eight placings were as follow :-1, J. B. Barley ; 2, E. E. Jones ; 3, T. J. Brookes ; 4, C. N. Hudson ; 5. W. S. Brookes ; 6, W. F. Parry ; 7, J. Urmson ; 8, H. Rothery. There were 15 starters and all finished. The trail was laid by Messrs Lyall and Platt, and Mr A Syson acted as starter and timekeeper,
To-day (Saturday) an inter-club run is to be held with the Liverpool Protestant Reformers' Harriers at Liverpool. The Homecroft team will meet at LiverpooI Town Hall at 2-40 p.m. to take the Walton car for Everton Valley, the dressing-room being at No. 53, Walton-lane.
