The first annual meeting of this club was held at the headquarters Egremont, on the 14th inst. The president, Mr. W. Harvey, presiding over a splendid gathering, the room being filled.
The Secretary's report on the past year's work contained an interesting account of the inception and progress of the club, its aggregate membership was twenty-one, and the majority of the members took part in the weekly runs with more or less regularity.
The aggregate medal (presented by Alderman Smith) offered for the member with the best record in inter-club contests, was won by the captain, W. S. Brookes, with 35 points, J. B. Barley being second with 29.
During the summer as a club they had been dormant, but a note was made of the fact that four of their number had succeeded in winning prizes on the track, to the value of nearly £23. It was hoped that this example would be acted upon by others, since that was one of the means by which the club was made known.
The statement of account showed a small credit balance. This they regarded as satisfactory, bearing in mind that their concern was not with matters of profit and loss, but to pay their way whilst accomplishing the good work for which the club was organised. For the happy results recorded they were indebted to many, to whom they hastened to express their gratitude, together with the hope that with the bright prospect before them, their well-wishers would continue that co-operation and support which alone could spell "Success."
The report and statement of account as submitted by the Secretary were unanimously approved of. The election of officers for the ensuing season then took place, with the following results : President, Mr. W. Harvey; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. E. Burgess, T. Jackson, C. A. Lee, H. P. Parry, G. J. Redford, and Samuel Hough; captain, Mr. J. B. Barley; sub-captain, Mr. W. F. Parry; committee, Messrs. W. S. Brookes, J. McGuire, T. Lyall, P. T. Monks and D. Walshe; hon. secretary and treasurer, S. L. Brookes; auditor, Mr. W. J. Glass, A.C.A.
It was resolved after some discussion that the club should apply for affiliation to the Liverpool & District Cross-country Association. Several important alterations were also made in the rules.
The heartiest thanks of the club were accorded the prize donors, officers, Press, and others for their help during the year.
The Secretary appealed to the members to do all in their power to make the club more widely known, they were the pioneer club in the district, the situation of their headquarters gave them unique opportunities, which he hoped they would not hesitate to seize. This year they were more ambitious, and with a membership which already showed signs of doubling itself, there was no earthly reason why they should not realise their ideals to the full, he believed they would, and that was half the battle.
The first run was arranged to take place to-day (Saturday) at 3.15 p.m. from the Headquarters, Manor-road.
The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mr. Harvey for his kind assistance as president, put to the meeting by Mr. S. M. Jones, and carried with acclamation.
