Cross-Country - Wallasey Athletic Club

Lovely run, lovely weather, lovely feed, and lovely sing-song - what more could one wish for? The boys turned up in large numbers for Saturday's run from the Eagle & Crown Hotel, Upton.

Chief Scout Scott, at the head of the pack, set a merry pace o'er hill and dale in the direction of Caldy and Frankby, then, turning left at Thurstaston, the fine old park of Arrowe was negotiated in rare style. At Woodchurch the order was given "Every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost," and after a terrific struggle over the last half-mile the club secretary just managed to get his nose in front. In a few years this young fellow may develop into a fine runner. And now to business, as Shakespeare says (or was it George Roby?) The tea was a great success. And the sing-song! My word, talk about talent! "The Follies" aren't in it with our little lot when they are out for blood. Messrs. Bale and Spence's rendering of Alexander's ragtime band, moved the audience to tears. They (the singers) should be with the Carl Rosa company! Bob, at the piano, was in rare form, and the efforts of the new members were much appreciated. A party of locals, led by the oldest inhabitant, very kindly assisted in the evening's fun (more power to their elbow.) At 9-30 a move was made in the direction of the station to catch the 10-6 train for home, which left at ten minutes to eleven. It was nearly midnight when we wended our way home, tired, but happy, and looking forward to to-day's run, which takes place from headquarters.
