Members of Wallasey A.C. who made the journey to Makerfield for the West Lancashire Cross-Country Championships on Saturday enjoyed a race under practically ideal conditions.
The going was easy and there were but few obstacles to negotiate, consequently fast times were returned for the course, which consisted of two three miles laps for the juniors and three laps (nine miles) for the seniors.
As in the Liverpool & District Championships, the club's chances were brightest in the junior event, which was contested by some hundred or so runners representing 10 teams.
T. B. Calveley again ran a brilliantly judged race in this event. Running 9th on the first lap he moved up steadily on the second and eventually finished 4th, 30 seconds behind the winner, T. Lee, of Sutton H., with Sutton H. also placing the 2nd and 3rd men. T. B. Calveley had the satisfaction of turning the tables on the three Merseyside runners who beat him a fortnight ago at Port Sunlight. He received the medal awarded to the first man home of an unplaced team.
B. Morgan 21st, K. Baird 26th, F. G. Ambrose 27th, ran splendidly and with all three improving and eligible to compete next year the club have the nucleus of a fine junior team.
Wallasey A.C. were placed 6th in the team race (H. Jones 55th and J. Edwards 64th completing the first six). The event was won by Sutton Harriers with Blackpool and Fylde Harriers 2nd and Wirral A.C. 3rd.
Unfortunately Wallasey were unable to start the minimum of six for the senior race in which over 160 runners representing 16 teams competed. The knowledge that they could not count in the team placings probably influenced the running of the five in the race. L. Bell and W. R. Richardson ran well, finishing together, but neither extended himself unduly, while W. A. Geddes retired at the end of the first lap.
R. Young and J. Davies, the club's other two members in the senior event, both completed the course but were never among the leaders.
Sutton Harriers swept the board as effectively in the senior race as in the junior. Winning the team race by a handsome margin from Pembroke A.C., they also provided the greatest shock of the day when two of their team, H. Williams and F. Tyrer beat the Wirral international, S. Dodd, for individual honours.
To-day the club have a fixture with Liverpool University, at Wyncote. Meet Pier Head at 2-30 p.m.
The club secretary, Mr. R. G. Hyde, will be pleased to supply information re the club's activities to any prospective member.
