The club lost its first away match of the season against Boundary Harriers over a 5¼ miles course, last Saturday, by a margin of 18 points, despite fine individual efforts by F. K. Ledward and L. Bell.
The margin would have been much less had correct tactics been employed in the early stages of the race. Unfortunately, several of the younger members of the team showed bad judgment in running the first mile too fast, with the inevitable result that they could not hold the leaders at the finish.
To the half-way stage, team placings were fairly even, but from this point onwards B. Morgan and F. G. Ambrose lost ground rapidly. The latter recovered somewhat in the last half mile, but B. Morgan seems unable to reproduce his last season's form and failed to count for his team. F. K. Ledward, consistent as ever, ran a great race with L. Craine of Boundary; the latter eventually winning by only 42 secs, from the Wallasey runner in the good time of 32 mins. 30 secs.
L. Bell, second of the Wallasey team to finish, improves each week. A first season runner, he produced a surprising turn of speed over the last two miles, and after overhauling some twenty competitors, ultimately finished 4th.
F. G. Ambrose 6th and K. Baird 9th, are both showing greatly improved form this season.
J. Cousins and R. Young completed the Club's first six, occupying the 15th and 16th places respectively. H. Jones, making his first appearance of the season, was close behind them, finishing 17th.
Team placings were as follows :-
Boundary Harriers: - 1, L. Craine; 3, E. Cole; 5, E. King; 7, J. Wilkinson; 8, H. Rimmer; 10, R. D. Riley. Total 34 points.
Wallasey A.C.: - 2, F. K. Ledward; 4, L. Bell; 6, F. G. Ambrose; 9, K. Baird; 15, J. Cousins; 16, R. Young. Total 52 points.
