Last Saturday members indulged in a final loosening-up over the home course, prior to the inter-club races which commence to-day with the club's visit to the Aintree headquarters of Boundary Harriers.
The dismal weather conditions prevailing on previous Saturdays were again in evidence and probably accounted for the poor attendance, only a dozen or so runners turning out to brave the elements and the prospect of a muddy passage over the Bidston marshes.
Two packs were formed, the first under W. A. Geddes, receiving two minutes start from the fast pack, which included G. M. Band, F. G. Ambrose, B. Morgan, H. C. Binns, W. G. Williams and R. Young. The marshes again proved an effective curb on pace and the speedier members could make no headway over the first half of the course. On the firmer ground from Moreton onwards, however, they rapidly overhauled the first pack and G. M. Band and F. G. Ambrose secured a commanding lead, finishing 1st and 2nd respectively.
K. Baird, making his first appearance of the season was 3rd, with L. Bell 4th, W. G. Williams 5th, and W. A. Geddes 6th. The latter was closely followed by T. Williamson who is showing considerably improved form this season.
A disappointing feature of the run was the re-occurrence of the old tendency to shorten the course. Training over a short course, while undoubtedly making for faster running, ultimately results in the sacrifice of stamina to speed, and it was this policy that in the main accounted for the disastrous outcome of the Club's venture in the District Championship last reason. Sooner or later members must face up to the necessity of training over a ten miles course, which is the recognised Championship distance.
In view of the importance of to-day's match with Boundary Harriers there will he no home run. Non-racing members in addition to the team should support this interesting fixture. Meet at Exchange Station at 2-20 p.m.
Information re the Club's activities may be obtained from Mr. R. G. Hyde, 14, Cromer-drive, or Mr. H. C. Binns, 46, Princesway.
