There was a fine muster of nearly 100 athletes, representing eight clubs, for the annual monster meet at the West Derby headquarters of Sefton A.C. last Saturday.
The Wallasey contingent, numbering 11, was weakened by the absence of many of its best runners, including the club champion, W. R. Richardson, and the junior champion, T. B. Calveley, but despite this handicap finished among the prizes in both Senior and Novice races.
The meeting opened with an easy paced run of about four miles. The pack then split into Senior and Novice sections, the former continuing their run for another two miles, while the latter made for the starting point of the mile "break."
Of the five Wallasey runners in the Novice Mile race, W. A. Geddes made the best start and was soon in the lead. Unfortunately, he found the pace too fast at the finish, and it was left to a new member, L. Bell, to carry the Wallasey colours into third place. With a little more racing experience the latter should develop into a fine runner. W. A. Geddes finished 8th, while G. Crompton and H. N. Butler occupied the 11th and 12th positions respectively.
The SENIOR MILE "break" was also a highly satisfactory affair from the Wallasey standpoint. F. G. Ambrose, running with fine judgement, took 3rd place, while F. K. Ledward (5th), was only just outside the prizes. A fall at the commencement of the race probably accounted for B. Morgan's failure to finish among the leaders.
There will be a practice run to-day from the Festival Pavilion, Leasowe-road headquarters. Arrive in time for a 3-30 start. New runners should visit headquarters or enquire particulars from either Mr. R. G. Hyde, 14, Cromer-drive, or Mr. H. C. Binns, 46, Princesway.
