The club opened the cross-country season last Saturday with a short training run over a 6½ miles course and despite the adverse weather conditions there was a very satisfactory turn-out.
The main pack under R. Young left headquarters at 3-45 p.m. and were followed a few minutes later by F. K. Ledward and F. G. Ambrose. Several late arrivals, under the hon. sec. R. G. Hyde followed after an interval of 15 minutes but failed to overhaul the main body of runners.
While no attempt at serious racing was indulged in there were a number of noteworthy performances, the best being that of W. A. Geddes, who recently did so well in the All-England Ten Miles' Walk. Apparently he found the heavy going over the marshes to his liking, as he had established a considerable lead over the rest of the field even before Bidston was reached. He held the lead for another four miles until overhauled by G. M. Band, F. K. Ledward and F. G. Ambrose, and eventually finished 4th, a great improvement on any of his last season performances.
G. M. Band and F. K. Ledward finished strongly, 1st and 2nd respectively, with F. G. Ambrose a good third. B. Morgan, runner-up in the Club Championship last season, was a comfortable 5th, while H. C. Binns, moving well at the finish, completed the first six.
To-day's programme includes the Monster Meet from Sefton A.C's headquarters at West Derby. All Wallasey runners should support this popular fixture, which includes a short social run of approximately six miles followed by a mile "break" (Senior and Novice sections). Meet Liverpool Town Hall 2-30 p.m.
Enquiries for membership should be made to Mr. R. G. Hyde, hon. sec., 14, Cromer-drive, Wallasey.
