Wallasey Athletic Club's team building efforts are at last bearing fruit, and last Saturday they amply avenged an earlier defeat by North Liverpool Gym Harriers over a seven mile course by 34 points to 47.
Wallasey have been consistently dogged by bad luck this season. In almost every match they have been handicapped by having two or more of the team unfit to race. Last Saturday proved no exception as both G. M. Band and N. J. Neale were unable to participate, and the club received another blow early in the race when H. C. Binns was compelled to retire through injury. That the club recovered from this early disaster was due in the main to magnificent packing by four of this season's new runners, T. B. Calveley, N. Jones, B. Morgan and F. Ambrose, who occupied the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th positions respectively.
W. R. Richardson made a welcome reappearance, and returned to his best form in taking the individual honours of the race after a great duel with E. Rodgers, of North Liverpool Gym Harriers. It is worthy of note that earlier in the season in the away fixture with this club W. R. Richardson won the race in record time for the course. F. K. Ledward was also well to the fore throughout the race, and running strongly on Leasowe-road, he had no difficulty in finishing third, the second home for his club.
Although this gave them two in the first three, Wallasey's hopes dwindled a little when their opponents took the 4th and 5th positions. However, all doubts were dispelled when the aforementioned quartette of new runners finished in a bunch down the final straight. All four are to be congratulated on their splendid effort for the club, especially B. Morgan as this was only his second race.
Although not counting for the team, W. G. Williams and G. Crompton helped materially in taking the 11th and 13th places respectively, this making the home club's victory more decisive. Full results as follows:-
Wallasey A.C. : W. R. Richardson, 1 ; F. K. Ledward, 3; T. B. Calveley, 6; H. Jones, 7; B. Morgan, 8; F. G. Ambrose, 9; total, 34.
North Liverpool Gym Harriers: E. Rodgers 2; Crosbie, 4; Ditchfield, 5; New, 10; Delaney, 12; Smith, 14; total, 47.
As a result of this victory Wallasey Athletic Club face to-day's home fixture with Boundary Harriers with renewed confidence. The approximate start will 3-45 from Leasowe-road headquarters.
