I spent a very interesting and enjoyable afternoon last Saturday when I attended Wallasey's home run.
The fixture list has taken them away from home for the three previous weeks, and all appeared glad to once again pace their own ground.
The occasion was marked by the presentation of medals to W. R. Richardson and N. J. Nield, the winner and runner-up respectively of last season's championship.
Mr. A. G. Nicholson, the club's president, carried out the presentation in his inimitable manner.
Few presidential positions can boast so athletically renowned a personality as that of Wallasey and on the few occasions when he manages to evade his wider responsibilities and grace the club with his presence he is accorded a hearty welcome.
Characteristically, he killed two birds with one stone and decided to join the runners. Although 56 years old he still shows that elasticity of step which brought him fame in his younger days.
N. J. Nield also succeeded in turning out, and appeared very satisfied with his first run of the season.
The event was more of a happy-go-lucky affair, the runners taking which ever course suited their individual desires. Incidentally, few decided on the longer course; the majority preferring to take the faster five-mile course.
The first back to the fold and a hot bath was G. M. Band, who was closely followed by J. Edwards and H. Jones. F. G. Ambrose showed considerable improvement on previous weeks.
To-day the club compete against North Liverpool Gym Harriers, Aintree, and it promises to be an exciting event.
Runners will please meet promptly at 2-30 p.m. at the Liverpool Town Hall.
Next week they have a home run which I expect will be more of a training run as it immediately precedes the Novice Championship, about which more anon.
