N. I. Marples, of Wallasey Athletic Club, has astounded the athletic world by winning the open mile handicap at Liverpool Police Sports and then again a week later at U.G.B. (St. Helens) Sports last Saturday, the total value of the prizes being £14-14-0.
His last three outings make a handsome record as follows: 14th June, 1938: fastest time ever recorded for the mile at Wallasey Grammar School in Old Wallaseyans versus School match; 18th June, 1938: First in 4 mins. 7 3-5 sees, off 183 yards at Liverpool Police Sports, Fairfield ; 25th June, 1938: First in 4 mins. 10 secs. off 163 yards at U.G.B. (St. Helens) Sports, both open mile handicaps.
A product of Wallasey Grammar School, where his best performance was the winning of the School's Senior Cross-Country Championship, Marples has by careful training steadily improved into a formidable runner.
Captained Wallasey A.C's. team when they won the West Lancashire Youths' Championship in 1936 and in the same year he was an easy individual winner of the Liverpool & District Youths' Championship. This year, his first as a junior, he has won the medal awarded to the first man home of an unplaced club in the Liverpool & District Junior Championship and was runner-up to J. Edwards in Wallasey A.C's. Senior Cross-Country Championship.
