Provisionally chosen for the English Olympic Team next August, A. B. Parker, of Liverpool University, turned out over his own course of seven miles against Wallasey Athletic Club last Saturday at Wyncote and won by about 400 yards.
Varsity had a strong team out in support with J. O'Donoghue, one of the best youths in the country last year and destined for high honours, finishing second, and L. J. Burns, who has run for the Universities Athletic Union on several occasions, third.
Wallasey ran very well up to the half-distance mark when five where packed solidly behind 'Varsities' third man, but after this the team weakened and lost contact with each other and only club captain John Edwards held on with the leading trio. Some creditable performances were registered, however, on a very tough course which included interminable stretches of soft plough and marshy country which combined with cold wind-driven rain made progress extremely arduous. Wallasey's juniors took main credit finishing as follows:- 7 H. Thomson, 10 D. Kelly, 12 A. Simpson, 16 M. Ward, 18 R. Bollard. Of the seniors, D. Dickinson is to be commended on a well-earned sixth place after a heavy fall in the early stages, and W. R. Bee showed good form over the first three miles on his first outing for a month.
This Saturday Wallasey A.C. visit Court Hey, Broadgreen, for a run versus Liverpool Pembroke A.C.
Youths will be run at Leasowe.
