Three members of Wallasey Athletic Club's ladies section represented two counties at Middlesbrough last Saturday in the Northern Counties Championships. Barbara Banks, recovering some of her past international form, fought well for Cheshire in the 1500 metres to finish 3rd with a fine time of 4 min. 34.2 secs., seven seconds outside her best.
Janice Watts finished 4th, for Lancashire, with 4 min. 42 secs., and Margaret Ashcroft also represented Cheshire, returning 4 min. 53 secs. Cheshire's final position in the meeting was fourth.
Nearer home, at St. Helens, Mike Teahan competed in an inter club match at St. Helens to finish 2nd in the senior men's 400 metres with 53.2 secs closely followed by colleague Phil Wade, still a junior, in 3rd place with a personal best time of 53.6 secs.
Allan Cheers competed the previous Wednesday evening in the Liverpool City Parks & Gardens Championships at Netherley, where he won the senior shot putt. He also ran in the 200 metres and was narrowly beaten by a tenth of a second into 2nd place, returning a personal best of 23.8 seconds.
