The Wallasey Athletic Club Cross-Country Novice championship was run last Saturday in deplorable conditions.
The strong wind and rain proved a great obstacle to the runners. The rain had made it very heavy going and in places the runners had to plough through stretches of mud and water several feet deep in places. The distance of the race was roughly four miles.
The race itself developed into a tussle between John Ryan and Phil Townsend. But the
greater stamina of John enabled him to forge ahead and win quite comfortably. Phil, however, maintained second place throughout the race. Third place was gained by A. Scott and fourth, Harry Lutas. The "Wright" Challenge Cup together with the medals were presented by the vice-president, Mr. R. Young.
This week there is an ordinary club-run. Everyone coming down should try to get down to the club before 3 p.m. Bearing in mind that the county championships are only three, weeks away, it is imperative that all runners who wish to do well in the championships should turn out to train in preparation.
Anyone interested in joining the club should contact Mr. R. F. Hubbard, 44, Tollemache Street, New Brighton or Mr. C W. Gee, 78, King Street, Wallasey.
