Last Saturday a number of local runners attended the St. Helens Police sports held in brilliant sunshine on a good track. The seven athletes who attended this meeting did not return empty-handed, though it must be admitted they were a little unlucky.
Natt Smith was the most successful in gaining, a second in the high jump. He was beaten by only 1 inch. Pete White was third, in the 880 yds. Junior, while Carl Gee was robbed of third in the shot by ½inch with Ray Owen fifth. Roy Parry, on leave from the Army, ran in both the 880 and 1-mile senior events but found his handicap and the heat a little too much for him. Eric Bennett was even more unfortunate for, after being narrowly beaten into 2nd place in his heat of the 100 yds., he found that only winners went into the final instead of the usual first two.
On Tuesday Carl Gee, the only club member to survive the heats of the Park & Gardens Championships in Liverpool competed in the finals of the shot. In this event he was placed 2nd in the discuss (110ft.). This Saturday, the club members travel to St. Helens again this time for the Pilkington Recs. annual sports meeting.
