The recent performance of John Wright in the Inter-Counties Championship when he finished 10th out of nearly 300 runners, marks him as the outstanding senior runner that Wallasey Athletic Club has ever had in its ranks.
He was the 4th Northern runner to finish - J. Anderson of Saltwell (3rd) and, E. North of Blackpool (8th) being two who beat him - and it is therefore interesting to note that they have both been chosen to represent England in an international event at Hannut, Belgium. On this form, John Wright is certainly knocking at the door for an international vest.
It will be unfortunate indeed if he is not able to run in the West Lancashire Cross-Country Championships at Preston today, but he has been a victim of 'flu and at the time of writing I understand that his appearance is uncertain. If he runs he must win in the absence of North, but if North is present a great duel will ensue for major honours.
Wallasey's senior team should hold a middle position in the team race. Much improved Brian Woolford should be second counter, supported by P. White, unfortunately lacking training, Hugh Pritchard, out to redeem his Cheshire disappointment, Bob Johnston, former County and West Lancashire champion, and V. Bayliss, who has terrific potential. In the Junior Championship, it will be interesting to see if Ron Barlow has regained his zest for competition. His 174th position in the Inter-Counties event was a big disappointment, but a good race today will do much to restore his confidence. Tony Townsend, Dave White and Phil Townsend will no doubt prove to be the other team counters in that order, ably supported by Ian Hunter, Brian Chalton and Dave Noble. The Juniors are holders of the Ham Finney Trophy, and we wish them well.
Wallasey's youth team has been weakened by the enlistment of V. Cowan in the R.A.F., but John Young, Billy Morris, and R. Hooker, should prove a useful three and, supported by Lewis, Powell and two others to be selected might spring a surprise in the minor team placings.
Special interest is centred on the Boys' team. Ably led by M. Howard; J. Melia, J. Howard, A. Briscoe, R. Voller, P. Kirby and W. Gregory should prove a strong enough combination to make their presence felt. Strength in depth is their main asset, but one must not overlook the fact that all these boys are lacking top-class competition.
Special transport has been arranged, leaving Wallasey Road (by St. Alban's Road) at 11.45 p.m. picking up at Birkenhead Town Hall at 11.55 a.m. All the teams and spectators should be on time. All are welcome.
