After six or seven weeks of continuous racing, Wallasey Athletic Club last Saturday had no fixture and those members who felt active enough to turn out enjoyed a run at their own speed over a distance of six or eight miles.
Today, the club are holding their annual Christmas Handicap races. Two races are to be held, one for youths and boys of about 2½ miles and the other for juniors, and seniors over 4½ miles.
These events are probably the most enjoyable of the cross-country season. Every member is given a handicap, and many club members who are seen only occasionally throughout the season endeavour to turn out for this event.
There is a prize for every runner who finishes the race and some of the prizes are well worth winning.
First man home has first choice of the prizes, second home has second choice, and so on, until all the finishing competitors have received a Christmas prize.
Many club members have been in the habit of bringing some small prize along with them, and this year any members who feel inclined to donate a prize, however small, are asked to bring them to the clubhouse this afternoon.
Next Saturday the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Championships are to be held at Wavertree Playground. There are races for boys, youths, juniors and seniors. Those members chosen to compete will be notified.
The club take this opportunity of wishing all club members, past and present, a very happy and enjoyable Christmas.
