In Wallasey Harriers championship a son follows in his father's footsteps, for the race was won by G. Band, whose father. Mr. W. D. Band was one of the fittest runners of his time.
Weather conditions were very good for such a race, but the country was in a very "sticky" condition, as anticipated. After a couple of miles had been traversed Young, Clee, and Band were seen to be prominent, and this order was maintained to the end of the Leasowe embankment. Then Band and Clee, who had evidently been keeping themselves in reserve, opened out, and the result was a surprising win for Band, with Clee second, and Bob Young third. Band was under the disability of having lost one of his shoes about three miles from home, but, in spite of this, he ran beautifully all the way. Times of the first five were: Band, 54 45; Clee, 54 55; Young, 55.15; Williams, 58 45; Seddon, 63 45; Gavin, 65 15. Mr W. S Brookes presented the winner with the Peers Challenge Cup (to be held for twelve months), and Band will also be the recipient of a handsome gold medal the second man receiving a silver medal.
