The Club held its five miles handicap race last Saturday. Due to the boisterous weather conditions, it was impossible to lay a trial, so the original course had to be abandoned, and the race was run over a course nearer six than five miles.
The course was from the headquarters (Wallasey Cricket Club), along Leasowe-road, to the hospital, along the embankment and shore, through Sandcliffe-road and home. A dozen members turned out, and after a gruelling fight for position W. G. Williams won first place, closely followed by R. Young, second, and D. Seddon, third. The winner's handicap time was 34 minutes 15 seconds, which was a good performance considering he had a strong head wind to contend with part of the way. Bob Young did very well to get second place, and it is remarkable how these old stagers give the young ones a run for their money. Mr. W. S. Brookes kindly officiated as starter, and in co-operation with Mr. J. Finnesey judged the race.
To-day (Saturday) the Club will hold its novice race. Members please meet at H.Q. at 3 p.m. Prompt. Anybody joining the Club before that date may enter for this race.
It may be pointed out that the directors of the Club have decided that anybody interested in taking up running as a sport will be allowed two trial runs with the Club, and then they can have the option of becoming a member of the Club or not. All enquiries should be made to the hon. secretary, Mr. R. C. Hyde, 14 Cromer-drive.
